Bypassing Modern WAFs in 2024
New techniques for evading detection in cloud-native environments.
Web Application Firewalls (WAFs) have become smarter, but so have attackers. In 2024, simple signature-based evasion is no longer enough. We need to understand the logic of the WAF to bypass it.
Protocol Smuggling
HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 offer new avenues for smuggling attacks. By manipulating the framing layer, we can desynchronize the WAF's view of the request from the backend server's view.
Encoding Obfuscation
Modern WAFs often decode input before inspection. However, double-encoding, unicode normalization quirks, and rare character sets can still confuse parsers. We've seen success with specific UTF-8 byte sequences that normalize to malicious payloads only after passing the WAF.
Behavioral Analysis Evasion
WAFs now track user behavior. To evade this, we must mimic legitimate traffic patterns. This means slowing down attacks, rotating user agents, and even simulating mouse movements in headless browser attacks.
